Adopt-A-Stream Program :: Bioassessment Monitoring Print E-mail
This is a study of the macroinvertebrates (bugs) and diatoms that live within our waterbodys. These are the species that live at the bottom of the food chain. Some species are very sensitive to pollution and so if we start to create an index of the current populations we could monitor for changes in the future; especially for changes that have to do with overpollution. Follow these 6 steps and join this worthwhile effort.

  1. Read this document called, "Quality Assurance Program Plan: Fairbanks Bioassessment Program." This document explains exactly what this entire project is about, where the sites are, when we are checking the habitat traps and how to collect and sort the specimens. The Standard Operating Procedures in this document has step by step instructions on exactly how to use the field equipment, collect, transport and preserve the speciments, along with record field data.

  2. Fill out this QUESTIONNAIRE for our Adopt-A-Stream program. You can fill it out on our website and hit submit or email it to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , or mail it to La'ona.

  3. Contact La'ona DeWilde and have a dialog about how many times a year you can commit to checking the habitat traps, what sites you are interested in or what sites we need help with and what you're training needs are.

  4. Read over the ADOPT-A-STREAM BIO-ASSESSMENT CONTRACT AGREEMENT and if you agree to all conditions of the agreement and want to Adopt-A-Stream, fill out the form, sign it and mail it to the address provided.

  5. Set up a time when you could go out into the field with La'ona DeWilde or other experienced sampler to learn our Standard Operating Procedures for Bioassessment.

  6. Check out bioassessment equipment prior to going out into the field. You will be responsible for this equipment and the return of it as well.
