Riparian Management Plan :: Public Workshops Print E-mail
Public Workshops

Home built very close to a riverbank experiencing rapid bank erosion, in addition to loss of fish and wildlife habitat and added bank stability once provided by the native riparian vegetation.
Public involvement and feedback will be an integral part of the process for developing a Riparian Management Plan for the Borough. We plan to hold public workshops to introduce the concept of a Riparian Management Plan, ask for input as the plan is developing, and invite public comment before finalizing the plan.

Through a variety of media, such as newspaper ads and direct mailings, the TVWA will request public comment at all stages of the project. Public workshops will be held by geographic areas within the Borough, such as Fairbanks, North Pole, Two Rivers, Salcha and Harding Lake to solicit input from a broad cross-section of Borough residents. A trained facilitator will manage the workshops. The first set of workshops will introduce the need for a Borough-wide Riparian Management Plan and present a summary of the available resources compiled by the TVWA, including solutions specific to Alaska and current regulations in Alaska. These comments will provide guidance for the structure and content of the plan. The second set of workshops will present the draft plan based upon input from the first set of workshops, and a geographic information systems (GIS) inventory of the FNSB waterways. The third set of workshops will present the revised plan for public comment and final revision prior to presenting the plan to the Borough Assembly for their consideration.

A questionnaire with specific questions appropriate for each stage of the process will be distributed, along with an opportunity to comment online or by (e)mail. Comments will be compiled and posted online. The TVWA will work with the Borough and other partners to consider public comments and revise the Riparian Management Plan accordingly. A discussion of the comments and reasons why any comments were or were not incorporated into the plan will be included with the final plan.
