Prioritizing Green Infrastructure for Chena River Road Crossings

This project was funded in part by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under assistance agreement number 00J84605 to the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) through the Alaska Clean Water Actions (ACWA) Program. The content of this site does not necessarily reflect the view and policies of the funders.

Between 2023-2025, TVWA has been working on a project to identify and prioritize the road crossings contributing the most contaminants to the Chena River and its tributaries through stormwater runoff; We have also developed conceptual designs for green infrastructure treatments to reduce that runoff. We hope these resources will be useful to the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT&PF), FAST Planning, the City of Fairbanks, the City of North Pole, and the Fairbanks North Star Borough Department of Rural Services. to more effectively plan maintenance and reconstruction projects for these road crossings.

  • The following report details field data collection for Grant ACWA-23-08. TVWA held a stakeholder meeting on July 11th, 2023, to review the prioritization of criteria and detailed plans for site assessments.   • With the prioritized road crossings selected and green infrastructure needs identified, TVWA will research and evaluate potential Green Infrastructure (GI) practices for application to the prioritized road crossing locations.
